E-Newsletter - 4 Tips to Getting Them Read

Kendra Wright of MailMentum was recently featured in Rising Women magazine. Her article "E-Newsletters - 4 Tips to Getting Them Read," was published in the magazine's Internet Business column. The following is an excerpt from the article:

E-Newsletter - 4 Tips to Getting Them Read
Through trial and error we have found four useful tips to make email marketing more successful. If these four tips are followed, your email campaigns are more likely to be opened, ensuring more lead generation for your company.

1
) Create a Punchy, Action-Oriented, or Time Restricted Email Subject
It is important to instill a sense of urgency or importance in your emails.. Consider the announcement, “You Are Invited to a Secret Sale Tomorrow from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m.” The reader feels special; they have been selected as part of an exclusive group. There is also a specific time and date range for the sale. The reader cannot put it off - they have to look now. Conversely, let’s say this company sends out the same email with a different subject line, “Summer Sale Offers Savings.” Everyone loves a bargain, but there is no sense of urgency or importance when viewing the email.

Remember the subject line in your email campaign is the first thing a reader sees. Make sure the first impression compels the reader to open the email.

New MailMentum Bounce and Exporting Features

At MailMentum, we're always trying to improve email marketing. We've recently added two new features that will make you more successful. First, we now allow you to export anyone who has opened or clicked in a campaign, and second, we've improved how we deal with bounced (undeliverable) messages.

With our new exporting feature, you can now export email addresses depending on how they reacted with your campaign. For instance, you can export anyone who opened your email or you can export only those who clicked a link in your email. You could add these people to a "hot" list in MailMentum for more frequent emailing if you like, or add them into another contact management program so you know who has expressed interest. To use this new feature, click the Export link next to the campaign (either from the main or Reports page) and select the email addresses you would like to export.

Now more people than ever will receive your emails, due to improving the intelligence of our bounce management system. Now we make a distinction between a "hard bounce" and a "soft bounce".

A hard bounce is one where the recipient does not exist or their domain name for their email address does not exist. This can happen for many different reasons, but is not always a permanent issue. To account for the fact that a hard bounce can be temporary, we don't automatically unsubscribe a recipient the first time this happens, but this address will show up as a bounce in your campaign statistics. Recipients will only be unsubscribed the third time this happens outside of two weeks from the original time the error occurred.

Any soft bounce is one where the email is returned due to a vacation autoresponse, a mailbox full, or over disk quota. These recipients will not be unsubscribed, but the address will still be reported as a bounce in the campaign statistics.

These two new features will help the most subscribers receive your email and help you get the most data from your email campaigns.

Happy Emailing!

How Do You Measure Up?

Customers often ask how their email campaign statistics compare to other customers. It can be helpful to compare how your campaigns are doing against others, so you can make changes if needed for optimal results. Here are the average statistics for all MailMentum customers:

  • Our average percentage of emails opened is 31.94%.
  • Our average percentage of people who click through to a link in the email is 5.70% (Note that this is based on the total number of email addresses in the campaign. If you calculate the click percent from only the ones opened, the number rises to 16.60%.)
  • Our average percentage of bounces is 7.49%.

MailMentum gives you statistics on your campaign, so you can see how you measure up. Just log into your MailMentum account, and go to Reports to see how each of your campaigns have done. Is the number of people opening your emails a little low? Make sure your From and Subject lines are clear, enticing, and free of spammer words (like "free," for instance) and punctuation (!!).

Do your click-throughs to your website leave a bit to be desired? Make sure the links in your email are specific and enticing. Don't just link to your homepage; link to pages within your site, and tell your readers why they should visit them.

Start with a "clean," recent list, and you'll improve your bounce numbers, and we at MailMentum are doing everything we can to make sure your emails get through to where they're intended. Watch your numbers - and continue to refine your format accordingly, and you'll have the best shot at email marketing success!

Happy Emailing!
